Today's Epidemic is Emotional Neglect

Angels for the Kids is a non-profit organization that brings together senior adults with children on school campuses across America to connect emotionally through the generation gap to relay wisdom and love to our kids.

Studies show that most kids today are simultaneously more connected and more disconnected than any prior generation.  Despite the efforts of well-meaning organizations that reach out to teach parents and educators to better relate to our kids, we as a society are failing them.  The problems they are facing today are multi-fold as they cope with the effects of an increasingly virtual and disconnected world, seductive messages of the media, pressures of their peers, and cliques and cruelties.  They long for for acceptance, fear rejection, face terrors.  They are bombarded with technology and are increasingly separated from each other, confused, and pushed to conform rather than be true to themselves.  They are emotionally bankrupt.

Because of this...

  • One out of five children in America are depressed.
  • Depression is the number one cause of suicide.
  • Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death among children and young adults ages 15 - 24.
  • On average, one person dies by suicide every 16 minutes.
  • For every suicide there are 400 attempts.
  • Each suicide intimately affects at least six other people
  • Patients hospitalized for suicide age 5 to 17 has doubled from 2008 to 2015.
  • From 2000 to 2009, there were 60 school shootings in America.  From 2010 to 2018 there have been 166.  There have already been 32 this year, averaging one per week.
  • 78% of these have been males determined to be chronically depressed.
  • Drug abuse is directly related to depression and emotional neglect.
  • An estimated 19.9 million kids age 12 or older are current users of illicit drugs.
  • Drug over dose death rate has doubled in the past decade among people aged 12-25.

If you're like most people, you are disheartened and disturbed by what's going on with our kids today.  You may have even been closely affected by some of these events.  They are not just family problems, or school problems.  They are community problems - society's problems.  We are far beyond the limits of our school counselors and therapy services.  We have to do something about this now and we need everyone's help!

Mission statements – Our mission is to stop the emotional neglect by reaching out to every child and showing them they are important, they are wanted, and they are loved.

The Solution – The Angels...

There are 73 million Baby Boomers in the United States and 10,000 are retiring every day.  They are the first generation to find themselves "let go" only to be replaced by the younger generation and unable to find work.  They are healthier, living longer, and will need to supplement their social security income more than ever.  Studies show that 46% of them have no retirement at all and of the remainder, 55% of them have less than $100,000 for retirement.  By 2022 workers 50+ will make up 35% of the possible work force.  Seniors are just the right people to reach these kids.  They have the time, the patience, the understanding, and the wisdom of their years.  They also need to feel valued and know that they can make a difference.

Our Goal - TASSELS

Ten-thousand Angels Stopping the Silence and Embracing Love by the year 2021.

About Us

What we're doing

We are an organization of "Angels" -  seniors on school campuses across America focused on connecting with kids to stop emotional isolation, which studies show is the main source of depression, suicide, drug abuse and other devastating effects on our kids.  We are there before school, during lunch, between classes, and after school.  We get kids talking, we listen and we care.
